Malware: The number is no longer in service | The Economist

ON JULY 9th users of hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide will be mystified. They will no longer be able to access websites, e-mail servers and other resources despite an active internet connection. The indirect culprit is the DNS Changer Trojan horse, a piece of malware which tweaks operating-system settings on computers and residential internet routers so as to redirect traffic to certain sites and rack up advertising fees. But it is America's Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) that is the proximate cause of the disruption.

So Much for Saving the Planet....

It seems we are not as serious about saving the planet as we like to claim. That's not really a surprise....

The US Government has slapped a 31% tax on solar panels, just when they were getting cheap enough that you could actually justify them.

It's said that the US imported abut $3bn worth of solar panels in 2011. At wholesale prices running around a dollar a watt, and most panels rated 200W or better, that's something in the range of 15 million panels. Installed in sunny locations, it's (very) roughly the equivalent of a 10 MW fossil fuel plant.

 

Oh well. Natural gas is clean and cheap. Keep on frackin'!

Computer Glasses

OK, not very dramatic. But with monitors getting bigger and bigger, the top edge of a monitor is higher than it used to be. So 'specially for us older folks, computer glasses help with neck strain and posture.

They are basically progressive-lens bifocal, but they are "biased" - there is a big sweet spot in the middle, just right for the distance of a computer screen. At the very top, they let you see distance.
